AMD Radeon HD 6990 Official: Successor to the Throne

We’ve been waiting to find out more about the AMD Radeon HD 6990 graphics card since we first heard about the dual-GPU and described it as a ‘whopper.’ We also told how there was likely to be a high-end graphics fight of the Radeon HD 6990 vs. NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 590, which at that time we had to base on rumored specs.

A lot of people are looking forward to these two slogging it out and it’s anyone’s guess at the moment which one will take the coveted top slot but at last we can tell you more about one of these, as the AMD Radeon HD 6990, also known as Antilles, is now official and is being touted as the world’s fastest ever video card.

Specs include 4GB of GDDR5 and 3,072 Stream Processors. There’s also 64 ROPs with 830MHz core clock speed, according to Vlad Savov over on Engadget. However that can be racked up to 880MHz with the use of the dual-BIOS switch. There are a couple of drawbacks though and one is that this whopper is pretty noisy while another is its hugely greedy card at 375W TDP. The Radeon HD 6990 is priced at $699.

There’s an extremely in-depth look at the Radeon HD 6990 by Ryan Smith over on AnandTech, which will tell you everything you need to know with a list of specs and comparisons with other cards and also a chart showing price comparisons for both AMD and NVIDIA cards and much, much more so check that out at the link if you want to be boggled. One thing is for sure and that is we cannot wait to see what NVIDIA is going to come up with in response. What are your thoughts on the AMD Radeon 6990? Let us know with your comments please.

What a rip off.699.00 that's a hundred over the hd 5970 when it was released. The only reason it is this high, is the fact that there is no competitive card out there. An extra 2 gigs doesn't cost a hundred dollars.
