Al Jazeera Twitter Uprising and Revolution Dashboard

We’ve been following the recent uprisings across the Middle East and Africa and reported on the Tunisian Twitter revolution, and the unrest in Egypt. Libya, Bahrain and Yemen are also countries where major developments are taking place now and in fact there is so much going on it can be difficult to keep up. This is where Al Jazeera comes in as the Qatar-based media outlet has now launched a Twitter dashboard showing global unrest.

At present the site is covering developments in Egypt, Libya, Bahrain and Yemen. Tweets are calculated daily by the dashboard, which comes up with an average amount of tweets per minute per country, according to Sarah Kessler over on Mashable. These calculations over time are also displayed on a graph so that users can see which country is being most talked about on Twitter. Total tweets for each country that day are also shown on the dashboard.

Al Jazeera has leapt to prominence with its comprehensive coverage of protests and demonstrations and this would seem a natural progression for the news outlet, although some would say it’s dashboard idea is a little late, considering the huge part that many people feel social media played in the uprisings. Saying that, the dashboard is useful and convenient as a way of keeping up-to-date with the latest developments.

What are your thoughts on the Al Jazeera Twitter dashboard? Will you be using it to keep up with the global revolutions taking place right now? Let us know with your comments us
