MacBook Air Success Story: Over 1 million shipped first quarter

The Apple MacBook Air is a very impressive notebook and here at OSM we often report on it in our articles. Since the line was refreshed last year we gave you the news on the refreshed models and a review roundup and then recently asked what could make the MacBook Air even better. So how successful has the new MacBook Air line been?

The answer is simply that the latest MacBook Airs have been a huge hit for Apple. In the fourth quarter of last year, which was the first quarter of sales for the refreshed MacBook Airs, new figures show that over 1 million were shipped. I’ve made no secret in past articles about my enthusiasm for the MacBook Air range. I use one every day and have nothing but praise for it, but it seems I’m not alone.

Kasper Jade over on Apple Insider tells us that there were 1.1 million total shipments of 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Airs in the three months up to the end of 2010. The figures came from Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst for Concord Securities. The extensive sales mean that this is one of the most successful Mac product launches ever for Apple. Initial estimates had been that around 700,000 units would be shipped in the first quarter of sales so the actual amount shipped vastly exceeded expectations, by 63% to be more precise.

Kuo also says that MacBook Air sales for this quarter remain steady but will be down by around 40% with shipments estimated at around the 700,000 mark. However we’d say this is pretty usual after a successful product launch and also the introduction of the new line of MacBook Pros, released in the last two weeks and which are selling strongly, will have impacted upon MacBook Air sales.
