BlackBerry OS 7 Reveal: RIM Software Leaked Roadmap 2011

Here at OSM we like to keep you informed with all the upcoming smartphones and operating systems news, and RIM’s BlackBerry products are always popular. Now we hear of a leaked RIM roadmap showing BlackBerry software developments coming in 2011.

We’ve been keeping you up-to-date with the new BlackBerry PlayBook tablet due for release very shortly, and recently told you about the BlackBerry Torch 2, Bold Touch and Storm 3 handset leaks. However the leaked roadmap will be of interest to many of you as it shows when we can expect BlackBerry OS 7 and also includes news of BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) updates.

It came to our attention from Zach Epstein over on BGR, sourced from N4BB and it looks as though BlackBerry OS 7.0 will be ready for core integration by November 2011. There’s also a BIS update 4.0 due in this quarter, followed by another, 4.1, due at the end of July or in August. There also appear to be updated apps coming for Twitter, Facebook, Social Feeds and others and you can see more on those plus some slide shots over at the BGR link above.

Chuong Nguyen on GottaBeMobile also looked at the leaked roadmap and makes the point that BlackBerry OS 7 will be the start of merging the smartphone and tablet platforms as OS 7 is thought to be a port from the BlackBerry PlayBook QNX OS. However this may not mean that the apps for BlackBerry smartphones and tablets will have compatibility, at least not at the start. What are your thoughts on the leaked roadmap information and specifically BlackBerry OS 7 coming in late 2011?

I remember waiting for Blackberry OS 6 to come to my Storm 2. Remember how that turned out? How can anyone be excited by new releases of a Blackberry OS if they can't use them on their Blackberry Devices. What I can look forward to is an end to my 2 year contract and switching over to a platform that comes with updates.
