iPad 3 Rumors Scuppered by iPad 2 Release

Since the iPad 2 was officially launched at an Apple Event yesterday, the general consensus of opinion is that this is a very decent tablet device indeed. However recently there were rumors of a possible iPad 3 also arriving this year, and only yesterday there were still rumblings that it may be better to wait for the third-generation iPad. After seeing the iPad 2 though, we wonder if this scuppers the rumors of an iPad 3 arriving this year.

Although the iPad 2 was only unveiled yesterday we’ve already posted many articles about it including release dates, the new Smart Cover, a tablet comparison, news on the A5 processor and much more. It may not have had every new feature that people were hoping for but that was a pretty extensive list, and all around the iPad 2 hits the spot.

There had been concerns that if Steve Jobs managed to attend the event (despite being on medical leave) that the next-generation iPad reveal would be overshadowed, but although Jobs received a standing ovation and many people, including us, were thrilled to see him, the iPad 2 certainly had enough to it to grab back the attention.

One thing that is interesting to note and particularly makes us feel that the iPad 3 may not be coming this year after all is something that Steve Jobs himself said at the launch yesterday. After speaking of various contenders to the iPad 2, such as the Motorola Xoom and BlackBerry PlayBook, Jobs finally revealed the iPad 2 and after more discussion about prices and features, he said, “When you add this together with over 65,000 apps, we think 2011 is going to be the year of iPad 2,” according to Daniel Eran Dilger over on Apple Insider. The clue is in those last few words of the quote. Jobs did not merely say iPad but specifically, iPad 2. Why would Jobs, of all people say that, if an iPad 3 was also planned for later this year.

Apple Insider also noted that although an iPad 3 would be likely to have a higher resolution screen, the release would be further away than the fall date that was being rumored, although it’s possible we could still see a smaller device. That would be more likely to be a big iPod touch though, rather than a mini iPad as has been speculated. Meanwhile over on Cult of Mac, Leander Kahney says that far from the rumors, the iPad 2 is certainly more than just an update and to forget the ‘iPad 3’ which for now seems like good advice as remember, “2011 is going to be the year of iPad 2.”

So will the arrival of the iPad 2 scupper the rumors of an iPad 3 for later this year, probably not, but remember those were just rumors after all, and the iPad 2 is here and now! What are your thoughts on this? Were you going to hang on for a possible iPad 3 or are you now going to head out on March 11 for your shiny new iPad 2 instead? Let us know with your comments.
