Oscars 2011: Justice For The Social Network?

The Oscars is regarded as the biggest night for film in the year, and if you enjoy Social Media then you were most probably rooting for The Social Network like we were.
The “Facebook film” as it is also known, had a mixed night as it did win 3 awards; however did not manage to scoop any in the major categories. It was very much the same story as the Baftas a few weeks back, where David Fincher’s movie picked up the same amount. The Social Network claimed accolades in the film editing, music and writing (adapted screenplay) categories, with the full list of winners and nominees being available on the Oscars official website.

On the night “The Kings Speach” greedily picked up 4 major awards, winning best picture and best actor for Colin Firth, as reported by Mashable. Christopher Nolan’s surreal box office hit Inception also picked up 4 awards in lesser categories including best special effects; if you have seen the movie you will know why. So did The Social Network get what it deserved?
I honestly believe that the film was quite hard done by with the awards it won. It is still fantastic to win 3 Oscars whilst being nominated in 8 categories; however editing, music and writing may not have been the film’s main points of praise. What may have failed The Social Network is what it stands for, as the more mature critics and voters may not have fully understood the message the movie was trying to convey. If you actively use Facebook and other social sites then you would immediately take more of an interest to the film, opposed to those who dont.
Fans of the film will have mixed feelings after last night as the victories feel almost like defeat. I was certain that Mark Zuckerberg’s fictional story would take one of the big ones, but it looks like the King ruled victorious in the end. I almost feel as bad as this time last year when Avatar was beaten by the Hurt Locker… absolutely shocking! Leave us your thoughts on the 2011 Oscars and if your favourite films picked up awards.
