HTC Thunderbolt Release Woes: Politics at Play – Further Delay

If you’ve been following all our stories about the ever-changing release date of the HTC Thunderbolt, coming to Verizon, you may well be one of our readers that we know are very unhappy with the current state of play. Although the HTC Thunderbolt Android smartphone is no doubt looking like a belter of a phone it’s a shame that the frustration that many consumers are feeling may well put some people off actually purchasing the handset.

Yesterday we told how once more, following a leaked tweet from a Best Buy store, it seemed the release date was being pushed back to March 4 which lead to a further influx of comments from exasperated potential buyers. However we’ve heard further news today to say it could be even later than that due to politics between the various companies involved, namely Verizon, HTC and Best Buy. Xavier Lanier over on Gotta Be Mobile reports on this and managed to speak to an HTC product specialist about this much-awaited device.

The HTC employee is currently training Verizon staff on the Thunderbolt and said that there were a lot of politics between the main players and even added that nobody seemed 100% certain of an actual release date. It’s worth noting though that yesterday we wondered if there was a problem with the actual handset and whether this was causing the delay but apparently Thunderbolts are being churned out and the release delay seems to be purely down to what we think the employee is politely calling “politics.”

The HTC employee also said that if the Thunderbolt didn’t appear on March 4 it would be no longer than a week afterwards. A week may not be a long time in politics but it’s a long time if you’re waiting for your new phone! In fact Gotta Be Mobile’s advice is to look forward to it on March 11 and then be pleased if it arrives a week earlier.

Yet another report on the Thunderbolt delay comes from Andrew Munchbach over on BGR who notes another leak, which seems to imply that March 10 is the date to look at. The leak is of a Best Buy roadmap that clearly lists a release date of March 10. What’s rather odd about this information though is that BGR said the same document was released to various tech websites at about the same time, so it does reek of a co-ordinated leak.

Also, the tweet from a Best Buy store that gave the March 4 release date yesterday has now been deleted so frankly it’s anybody’s guess now and we can quite understand why many consumers feel they’re being messed about. We’ve also reported recently about price confusion and an ad teaser for the HTC Thunderbolt and if you still want to find out more about this 4G handset with 1GHz Qualcomm processor, 4.3-inch display and 8-megapixel camera head to the HTC product page for it here.

As said previously, yesterday’s article about a release date delay met with a torrent of understandably frustrated comments so what an extra delay will unleash is unknown. Do let us have your further comments though, there’s safety in numbers so why not let off steam!

I think it's time to look at the Atrix.

There's a great commentary on this botched release posted at http://buythunderboltphone.com/2011/02/htc-thunde… Hopefully these companies can get their business in order soon!
