iPad 2 Confirmation: Official Release / Launch Media Event

For months now, the internet has been rife with speculation as to whether we will definitely see a next generation iPad or iPad 2 if you prefer, new features, pricing and of course the all important question the release date? Breaking news has been announced, stating that Apple will indeed be holding an event next week on March 2 and thankfully the iPad 2 will then be confirmed.

Matt here at OSM yesterday spoke of such an event which at that time was pure rumor, but according to the team at AppleInsider via The Loop, this is now actually going to take place. Official invitations have been sent to attendees including the media, for the March 2 event taking place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

If you look at an example of the invitation below, you will clearly see a big iOS calendar icon keenly positioned on the iPad, and if this isn’t enough indication as to what the event will be about, then what is?

In regards to what the iPad 2 (if this is the name) will include such as a specification listing, we will have to wait with baited breath until next week. Rumors have consisted of thinner and lighter design, faster processor, improved graphics, FaceTime camera and so on. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities has spoken of Apple partner Foxconn building in the region of 4.5 million to 5 million iPad 2 units during the first quarter of this year, something of which we touched on at the end of last year. Subsequently more units will be supplied in the region of 3 to 4 million in April.

If rumors turn out to be fact, then the first batch, at least 60% of iPad 2’s will in fact be 3G capable with the inclusion of GSM and CDMA radios. Here at OSM we have given news of cases including a leather offering from an Asian supplier. The case(s) seen have included an extra port on the side, leading one to believe that this will provide room for a “Mini DisplayPort Adapter,” or “Thunderbolt” connection port which we reported on today for the MacBook Pro.

So with confirmed news today, what are your thoughts on the arrival of Apple’s iPad 2? Will you be hot footing to a retailer when launched or are you keen to see if the tech giants roll out a iPad 3? Let us know your comments.
