New Android Smartphones 2011: Roundup of 8 of the Best

After CES and MWC 2011 we all know that there are some truly great Android smartphones due to come on the market over the next few months. The smartphone market is booming and the advances being made every day are astounding. However if you’re in the market for a new handset you may be wondering where to start.

We thought we’d take a look at some of the phones we’ve written about over the last month of so and round up 8 of the very best for you to give you some idea of what will be available and maybe help you decide which is the phone for you. Some of these phones are due out very shortly while others should be released later in the first quarter or into Q2.

We’ve made our selection from what we’ve observed and also used some details from an article over by Jose Vilches on Techspot, and your opinions may differ on phones we’ve include or left out but this is intended to be a selection of some of the best. We’ve also linked to some of our previous articles on these phones so that you can read more about them.

1 – First off we have to point out the HTC Thunderbolt coming to Verizon by the end of the month. This is the first 4G phone for the Verizon LTE network and as such is drawing a lot of attention. Apart from that the specs are pretty impressive too. There’s a 4.3-inch touchscreen, 8-megapixel camera with HD video recording capability, a 1GHz processor and it will be running Android 2.2 with HTC Sense.

2 – The Motorola Atrix 4G release is also due in the next few days and this is a 1GHz dual-core processor phone for the AT&T network. This is one of the upcoming wave of dual-core phones and is the first of these to be available on AT&T. This also runs the Android 2.2 operating system, and has a 4-inch qHD display with fingerprint recognition. The Atrix 4G also has dual-cameras, expandable storage and HDMI out and if you purchase the additional laptop docking accessory you have PC functionality.

3 – The HTC Inspire 4G is a 4.3-inch display superphone and runs Android 2.2. It has an 8-megapixel camera, HD video capture a 1GHz processor and a smart aluminum unibody design. It’s coming to AT&T and this one is already available so you might want to head out now! An additional feature of this phone is the next-generation HTC Sense, which includes cloud services.

4 – Some of the following wave of new Android smartphones include the LG Optimus 3D which will run on Android 2.2. The carrier for this phone and availability date has not yet been confirmed but it’s thought that it will be released in Q2. The Optimus 3D will feature a dual-core processor, 5-megapixel rear camera and DLNA support but the extra that separates this phone from the others is that it’s a 3D-capable phone and is also glasses-free.

5 – Moving on then to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc and if looks is what you’re after then this could well be the phone for you. It’s a beautifully designed slimline phone that is due for release in late Q1 or early Q2. It’s not just about the looks though as it also has an 8-megapixel camera, 4.2-inch touch display and 1GHz processor. The carrier has not been confirmed but this smartphone will be running Android 2.3.

6 – Of course we cannot leave out the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (commonly dubbed the PlayStation Phone) for all you gaming enthusiasts out there. This really is one for gamers, who cannot wait for its release in March or April 2011 when it will be carried by Verizon. It will be running Android 2.3 and have a 5-megapixel camera and 4-inch multitouch screen but the Xperia Play also features a slide-out keyboard for gaming use, with a digital D-pad, and even the four PlayStation buttons (circle, cross, square and triangle).

7 – Next on our list is the Samsung Galaxy S2 or S II (official name). The extreme slimness of this phone is a standout feature, with it being only 8.49 mm at its thinnest point. This Galaxy S II is looking like an impressive phone and is due for release this month in Europe and some time in Q2 for the U.S. It will operate on Android 2.3 and features an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording plus a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. Some versions will also have NFC (near-field communications) function, which will enable users to use the phone as a mobile payment system. It also features a 4.2-inch Super AMOLED Plus display.

8 – Although this is not on the Techspot list we have to include the Motorola Droid Bionic which is a 4G phone coming to Verizon for its LTE network. This is also a dual-core processor phone with a qHD display and is rumored to be coming in the second quarter. There’s also an 8-megapixel camera and it will be running Android 2.2 with MOTOBLUR.

You can also find prices for all of these phones (if available) at the Techspot link above. These are just some of the upcoming Android smartphones that you might find suitable for you and certainly some of the best we’ve seen so hopefully this may help you make your decision.
