Motorola Droid Bionic vs Droid X2: No Contest

The upcoming Motorola Droid Bionic 4G phone has been creating a lot of attention just lately, as it will be carried by Verizon and be able to take advantage of its 4G LTE network. As one of the first 4G phones out, it will compete with the likes of the Motorola Atrix 4G, coming to AT&T and the HTC Thunderbolt coming to Verizon.

Now though another Motorola Droid has come along, this time it’s the Droid X2 and there are leaked but not confirmed specs available so we thought we’d like to compare the Droid Bionic and the Droid X2 to see which comes out best. We’ve already published a lot of articles about the Droid Bionic including a comparison with the Atrix 4G, and an estimated release date at the end of the second quarter.

For the Droid X2 we heard of some leaked specs but expressed some doubt about the accuracy. Now we hear of an update on the leaked specs from Myriam Joire on Engadget, sourced from The Mobi Zone (cached), and it does look as though those early specs were a little over-egged. The latest leaked specs for the Droid X2 are that it’s more like a slight upgrade to the Droid X. It will have the same 4.3-inch WVGA (854 x 480) display, and not the qHD display which will be on the Droid Bionic and is of better-quality.

The Droid X2 was also originally rumored to have a 1GHz Tegra 2 dual-core processor but the later information gives it a 1.2GHz single-core processor. However the Droid Bionic is confirmed as having the dual-core processor. Both handsets will be coming to Verizon but of course the Droid Bionic’s edge is that 4G connectivity, whereas the Droid X2 will be only 3G. Both are also thought to be due for release in Q2 although there have been recent rumors that the Droid Bionic may be coming sooner than first thought.

Another rumored spec for the Droid X2, sometimes known as the Droid X squared is 768MB of RAM while the Bionic will have 512MB of RAM. We know that the Droid Bionic is to have an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and it’s thought that the Droid X2 will have the same. Both phones will also come out running the Android 2.2 OS and both will have MOTOBLUR. If you want to read more about the Motorola Droid Bionic check out the Verizon news page here.

Of course we’ve only compared the specs of the Bionic to the rumored specs of the Droid X2 and so this has to be a limited comparison. However on what we know so far it would really seem that the Droid Bionic wins over the Droid X2, no contest. To be fair as one is a 4G they’re not really intended at the same markets but why buy a 3G when such a good 4G is available, unless of course the 4G network is not yet in your area. The price may also be a factor for some and we don’t have details of that yet, but it’s important to remember that the Droid X2 really just seems to be a refresh of the Droid X and of course the 4G connectivity of the Droid Bionic and improved display, must come come to the fore.

What are your thoughts on these upcoming Motorola devices and which one, if either are you putting on your wishlist and why? We’d appreciate your comments on this please.

Is it possible that this supposed X2 could just be a global version of the Droid X?

  • Nic

Battery life will the the most important option for me on both these phones. Looking forward to the review.

im 99% sure the "specs" ppl are reading about are from the Global version of the Droidx, being 3G and 1.2Ghz single core.

One thing to remember with the Bionic's 512 MB of RAM is that it is DDR RAM. Literally twice as fast as RAM in current phones.

Thank you for pointing that out to me. I didn't have any idea that was the case and now I'm even more determined to get my Bionic when they come out!
