Google Social Search: Twitter-Check, Quora-Check, Facebook-Nope

When it comes to the battle between Facebook and Google, social networking giant vs. the world’s favorite seamless search engine it becomes an interesting battle. We have previously informed you of how they are after each other’s market and how they were battling to get you to select them as your homepage.

Now we are reporting on the newly updated Google Social Search where Twitter and Quora have been included, but wait where’s Facebook? Oh that’s right, they haven’t been included, you don’t think this has something to do with the rivalry between the two of them do you? We Do!

So Google added an update to their blog on February 17th saying that they are doing a bit more to bring you all the goodness of Google as well as the opinions of people that matter to you. Google Social Search was actually introduced back in 2009 and since then they have made a number of improvements to it.

What changes will you see?
Well prior to the changes, the social search would appear at the bottom. Now the social search has been integrated with the Google search and will be sorted by relevance with the inclusion of your friends blog posts and experiences with your searched for subject. The Google blog use the example of Mount Kilimanjaro and their colleague ‘Matt’ had written a blog post of his experience, if you look on the image below, the 3rd search has a picture and the colleague’s name as he shared his experience in a blog post! You can check out the other search amendments in the Google Blog Post or alternatively in the video at the bottom of the article.

Over at ZDNet, Emil Protalinski mentions that it’s almost laughable that Google aren’t including Facebook in these searches, especially when you think of its 600 million strong army of users. We would tend to agree with what is being said as we think Google are just trying to get one over on Facebook.

What do you think? A ‘social search’ without the biggest social network? Well done Google… Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
