Apple TV Rumor: An Actual Set, Not An Accessory – Really?

As if we haven’t got enough TV manufacturers there are still an awful lot of people who would love to have a TV produced by Apple and there are rumors today that this could be in the pipeline. We have reported many times on Apple TV but this is actually a TV accessory in the form of a small black box as most of you know, but this time we mean a real, actual TV.

The rumors have been sparked by an Apple job listing on its website and was reported by Zach Epstein over on BGR, sourced from 9to5Mac. The actual job posting was for an AC/DC Power Supply Design Engineer and although we’ve heard previous speculation of an actual Apple TV, this snippet could be seen as rather revealing.

Part of the job listing reads, “The position primarily involves high-density offline power supply’s development for Apple’s next generation Macintosh platforms spanning from notebook computers, desktop computers, servers, standalone displays and TV.’ Note the AND TV. Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac points out that “TV” is clearly separated from “standalone displays” and so this is not meant to be for Apple’s LCD displays but for a TV set.

There has been previous speculation that Apple would one day develop its own TV set and we can only imagine what a big hit a TV could be for Apple. Let’s face it, the company can sell products on its name alone, although of course that’s not the only reason for its huge success. We have to point out though that this is conjecture at present and Sara Yin over on PC Mag makes no bones about casting doubts on this speculation, pointing out that Apple is known for its secrecy and would not give away plans for a product through a job listing.

Yin also gives more reasons why the rumors should not be believed so check it out at the link. What are your thoughts on an actual Apple TV set? Do you think it will ever materialize or is this people reading too much into things? Let us know with your comments please.
