New Android OS to Mix Gingerbread & Honeycomb – Ice Cream?

The new Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS is about to take the world by storm with devices for this tablet-specific operating system, such as the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, due out shortly. Attention has already turned though to the next Android OS which we’ve previously speculated would be called Ice Cream or even Ice Cream Sandwich.

As Android OS names have followed on alphabetically and been named after dessert goodies, such as Froyo, Gingerbread and Honeycomb the logical step for the next name would be Ice…. (fill in the blanks). If you’re interested in all things tech then you’ll know that MWC 2011 is currently ongoing in Barcelona and Google’s Eric Schmidt today took to the stage and gave a little info about the next Android OS in his keynote address, according to Nilay Patel over on Engadget.

Not only did he confirm that the next OS would be named after a dessert and begin with an ‘I’ but Schmidt also stated that it would be a version that combined Gingerbread and Honeycomb into one OS suitable for both phones and tablets. There was no news given on when it would become available (what were you thinking!), but Schimdt did say the updates come around on a “6 month cycle.”

Devindra Hardawar over on Venture Beat also reports on the Android Ice Cream speculation and noted it could be numbered OS 3.1. Hardawar also points out that even once they are announced new Android OS’s usually take some while to get to devices so the 6 month cycle hint doesn’t actually give much away. What are your thoughts on this new OS that will combine Gingerbread and Honeycomb into one cohesive operating system and while you’re there why not take a guess at the name? Let us have your comments please.
