iPad 3 or iPad Mini Rumor Machine: iPad 2 follow-on due fall?

Here at OSM we’ve been following all the news and of course, speculation, about the upcoming iPad 2. Among our recent articles we told of the release hopefully drawing closer after many original iPad accessories were reduced in price, and also told how Apple CEO Steve Jobs is still firmly in control of developments of the iPad 2 and iPhone 5, despite being on medical leave.

A few days ago we also told of rumors about a mini iPad with a 7-inch screen coming, which seemed a little doubtful when considering Steve Jobs previously spoke out against such a device. However the rumors of a fall release of an iPad 3 (or as some people are calling it, an iPad Mini), stemmed from John Gruber of Daring Fireball fame who is known for his usually reliable contacts, so we were not willing to dismiss the idea of a mini iPad immediately. We should point out though that Gruber himself did not mention a smaller iPad but many have speculated that this is what it would be.

We now hear more rumor about this, from Desire Athow over on ITProPortal, which says that the iPad 2 expected in a few weeks will be followed by a ‘little brother’ in smaller 7-inch form. This is claimed to be information from a source but no further information is given on this. Athow states that this ties in with the previous rumors and would also go nicely with the iPhone Mini that is being speculated. We have already written about the mini iPhone (or iPhone Nano) earlier today and feel there is much more evidence so far of this than a mini iPad.

However Athow refers to this mini iPad being released in around September and you just never know. Rob Pegoraro over on The Washington Post also speaks of an iPad 3 release this fall but says that Gruber refers to this as an iPad 2.5 with the same screen size, so to be honest at the moment it’s anyone’s guess.

We’re sort of hoping to hear an iPad 2 release announcement any day now, especially as MWC 2011 has just got underway in Barcelona and it would be rather fitting for Apple to make a big announcement of its own. What are your thoughts on a mini iPad or iPad 3 coming in the fall? Let us know with your comments please.
