Acer Iconia “Gingerbread” Smartphone: Official Specs & Release Details

At the start of January, we brought you news regarding the new Acer Iconia A500 tablet, debuted at the CES show, but its talk of a new smartphone that caught our attention today, bring on the “Acer Iconia Smart.” We wonder if in an ever increasing market of phones and tablet devices, whether Acer have done enough to get you transfixed by their offerings. Let us know what you think at the end of this post.

As you look at the phone’s appearance, you will see its thin but curvy, designed with a patterned slight wavy effect, which is hoped to give it that extra edge amongst its competitors. In terms of specifications, the phone running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread which may be a little disappointing to some, it will include a 4.8-inch screen with 21:9 cinema-style ratio, clearly giving the user the opportunity to “watch movies” as if you were at the cinema. A selling point to this new device as Pocketlint stated, is the opportunity to browse the web, with the benefit of seeing the majority of the web page without having to adjust the size, a view that is mixed with the guys over at Phandroid.com.

As they commented, with the screen being of such a big proportion, yes, its fine for surfing the web, but when using it for games and videos, the screen could easily show black bars along the side, therefore in all honesty, it’s wasted space.

Internally, the Smart is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, connectivity is via HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, 2 megapixel camera on the front with 8 megapixel on the back including LED flash, HDMI-out, 720p video playback and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The phone’s display features 4 buttons, that of the Home, Search, Back and Menu. The one nice feature is when you use a sweeping stroke on the bottom panel to access the main launch icons which in turn can then be replaced with other apps.

Although Pocketlint reported on a launch date in UK stores sometime in April but no confirmed price, over at Phandroid.com, they stated that it will be in the region of $499. April is definitely the month for release but only for the European market, with America following in June/July time.

Will the new Acer tempt you, or does the huge size put you off? Let us know.
