HP 9.7-inch TouchPad: Price & Release Date

You may remember our report this week about HP’s new tablet, the TouchPad. Well it certainly looked impressive, and with spec’s to make the current iPad blush, Alan over at PR News questioned whether Apple will be able to match the competition in 2011?

Initially after seeing the hands-on video from Engadget, we were left with a summertime ETA for the TouchPad’s release. Since then BGR have found information suggesting a market launch date before the end of June. Price wise the HP tablet should come in at $699, which puts it level with Apple’s 64GB first gen iPad and $100 less than Motorola’s XOOM.

As we mention the TouchPad’s features support its price tag, dual core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor along with 1GB of RAM start off the list. From this the tablet offers a 9.7-inch display with a front facing camera, as yet it seems that it lacks a rear mounted camera which Apple’s iPad 2 is rumored to contain when if finally arrives.

So with tablets from Motorola, LG, BlackBerry and now HP, Apple really has its work cut out if it wants to stay at the top. I hope that the second generation iPad really impresses, because without the wow factor, iPad will just be another tablet in a sea of very capable devices.

How do you think that the tablet market will pan out once all the manufacturers have released their offerings? Tablets are obviously set to be the must have technology for this year, so the only thing that can be sure is that as customers we can only benefit from the companies competition.
