Vodafone Webbox – Internet Keyboard Uses Opera

Vodafone are certainly making an effort at the moment, we recently reported on their promotional video featuring Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button for the UK festivals. Not only that but being one of the big five carriers in the UK we have also learnt that they will be getting the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

Now we are reading reports from Slashgear’s Chris Davies of a new product and we want to know your thoughts on it. First of all, what is it? It’s basically a keyboard that is Internet enabled which will turn your normal TV into an ‘Internet portal’. The keyboard has smartphone technology integrated; the analyst in the video at the bottom of the article says that they have taken the guts of the phone and ripped out everything non-related to data and put a keyboard in.

Vodafone describe the device as being specifically developed for emerging markets, where technology and cost prove to be barriers. The Webbox will enable you to have Internet access directly to your TV. They have made it very simple as it requires no installation and you can plug it in using standard RCA connectors.

The Webbox connects using an integrated GSM/EDGE modem and utilized Opera’s compression technology. For those of you who are unaware, Opera can compress a webpage by up to 90%. Over on the Vodafone website they have added the press release, which tells us that it will be launching in South Africa first costing €75. It comes with a free 2GB SD card and data purchased on a pre-paid sim.

What do you think of the Webbox? Remember to take a look at the video below and then let us know your thoughts in the comments box.
