Motorola Xoom Release Feb 24: Minimum 1 month data for WiFi?

Here at OSM we’re looking forward to one of the most-awaited releases of the year, that of the Motorola Xoom tablet. This tablet will be the first released to be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb and has had a huge amount of positive press. It looks set to be a main contender against other upcoming tablets such as the BlackBerry PlayBook and the iPad 2.

Among our most recent posts on the Xoom were news on the leaked release date of February 24 on Facebook and a look at the Xoom vs. the iPad 2. Today’s news consists of two snippets of information. The first from Vlad Savov over on Engadget seems to confirm the release date as February 24 from a Best Buy ad, which also shows a price of $799.99. There are also some data plans listed, among them 1GB monthly allowance for $20 and 10GB monthly for $80.

So far, so good, but then some more news has come in, this time from Darren Murph also on Engadget, which seems to show that to activate Wi-Fi on your Xoom, there’s a catch. One of the fine lines on the advert says, “To activate WiFi functionality on this device, a minimum of one month data subscription is required.” This is certainly not what people were expecting or wanting to hear although Murph cautions not to be overly concerned just yet as this is not official and the ad also seems to contain some typos.

As Engadget says though, it all sounds rather ominous and if true an awful lot of people won’t be very pleased. An update on the post also says that some Best Buy Mobile employees say the Xoom’s cannot be sold without activation on the Verizon network so there would most likely at least be an activation fee. Meanwhile if you want to find out more about the Xoom the Motorola portal here is up-and-running and will tell you everything you need to know about features, accessories etc., though doesn’t mention yet the stuff we really want to know, such as whether WiFi will be locked until you splash out for one month of data service.

We shall certainly be watching closely to see how this situation develops and will bring you more as we hear it. What are your thoughts on the Xoom and Verizon possible slapping on a minimum of one month data subscription to activate WiFi? We’d be interested in your views so please do send in your comments.

I was planning to buy one to tether its wifi to my android phone's hotspot. BUT, since they have locked the wifi, they just lost a customer. Next tablet please…..

I won't mind buying the xoom, provided that I can cancel my data subscription after a month and still retain my wifi!
