HTC Thunderbolt Release: Pre-orders today at Best Buy plus price

We’ve been bringing you news and speculation about one of the most-awaited handsets in a while, the HTC Thunderbolt coming to Verizon. Among our many recent posts were an unboxing, rumors of a February 24 release, and then another about the rumored release being sooner than expected, on February 14.

Last week we also told of a leaked Best Buy advert saying the HTC Thunderbolt would be available to pre-order soon and we can now tell you we have news that the pre-ordering is available from today (Sunday). The news comes to us from Kellex over on Droid Life, sourced from Best Buy, and you can pre-order from Best Buy now with a $50 deposit.

We really are excited about the Thunderbolt and think it’s one of the best alternatives to the iPhone you are likely to see, for some months at least. It’s an Android 4G phone for the Verizon LTE network and has an 8-megapixel camera with LED flash. However there still seems to be some confusion about the release date.

Darren Murph over on Engadget reports on the pre-orders now being available and says as we previously thought that, the expected date of release is February 14. However, yesterday in another of our posts we told of reports saying that the release date could be pushed back because of the success of the Verizon iPhone. The Best Buy pre-order details still do not give a firm release date so for now it’s still anybody’s guess but we think it would be a real shame if the Thunderbolt doesn’t now appear on February 14.

The article on Engadget also quotes “on good authority” a price for the HTC Thunderbolt of $249.99 on a two-year contract, which ties in with our previous price report. What are your thoughts on the HTC Thunderbolt? Have you already pre-ordered and if so were you given any indication of a release date? We’d be interested to hear from you so please do send in your comments.

I called Best Buy this morning and was told the phone would be in stock Saturday February 12th. I then went to the store and pre-ordered the Thunderbolt and was told that the employees at the store did not know when the phone would be released.

I pre-ordered today and was told they have not heard that the original date of the 14th has been pushed back but they cannot guarantee it won't. When I asked about the price and put the $249 I've been reading on the web to the employee he responded he didn't think it would be over $200 but they have not received pricing yet. I don't know if he really didn't know or if he just can't be liable for saying.

Well, it looks like they've pushed the release date to November 2011. Seems there's a problem with the little kickstand breaking… and so, they are trying to decide which kind of carbonite material to use, instead of remanufactured plasticalitonomical reversed osmosis curaid. Not sure what that means … but … oh well….

Also, Best Buy made a big announcement that they are refunding all of the preorders since it's more than 60 days out …

    I'm bummed!!!
