Social Media Used In Prison: Inmates Offend From Inside

Social media and social networking has many uses, recently we have heard Pope Benedict’s views on the subject as well asking you if you think social media is the best placed in the sports industry. We have also reported on the darker side of social networking, which is partly to blame for the tragic death of a 14 year old boy.

Now we are hearing reports of social networking and social media being used in prisons, inmates are actually managing to get their hands on smuggled smartphones and communicating with each other and the outside world. This means that they can actually plan their next crime whilst behind bars or co-ordinate others to commit the crime!

According to UPI.com, a convicted killer named Quincy Howard had his cell phone confiscated however his Facebook page is still going strong. Apparently he has added 100+ friends in the past week from a maximum-security Lee Correction Institute.

You can see why this is a problem, if a criminal is the mastermind behind a crime but isn’t present at the scene of the crime, then they are clever enough to do it via Facebook or another social network. A prison guard of the Lee prison was actually shot at his home last year, how was it arranged you ask? Well apparently an inmate had a cell phone smuggled in; the inmate then used that phone to order his killing. Another source that are reporting on various inmates and their crimes committed from inside is on thestate.com where Glen Smith has written an article.

However you look at it, something needs to be done here. There needs to be some kind of process that stops all of the social networks and cell phone connectivity, what would you suggest is done to stop this happening in the future? Let us know in the comments box below.
