Beware: Facebook Scam Targeting Children

Recently news of cyber crime on social networking sites has been a big topic of conversation, its never really gone away but there seems to be a big increase and today, disturbing news has come through of recent scams targeting parents and their children.

At the Leicestershire Constabulary, they have reported that the scams seen on Facebook amongst other networking sites, are enticing some users into clicking onto fake modelling agencies. The sites are cruelly asking for children to model just in their underwear, and if clicked onto, the children will then be contacted via email asking them if they have an interest in modelling. As The Press Association reported, after a barrage of emails, the children are then asked to send in photos of themselves in just their under-garments.

The sites as the majority of scams goes, looks to be genuine, incorporating so-called company logos and so on. At this moment in time, the police in Leicestershire are working closely with Facebook to remove any present sites, but on saying this, more will no doubt appear.

In response to this, Detective Sergeant Ed Jones from the Paedophile and Online Investigation Team has said, “Do not be fooled by these emails, a reputable modelling agency would never approach you in this way. Do not post pictures online of yourself posing in your underwear and if you are under 18 these photographs may be indecent under UK law.”

As for Facebook, a statement was made from their spokeswoman who said, “We encourage people using Facebook to think carefully before they add a new friend and check that the person is who they claim to be and not to add or accept friend requests from people they don’t know. It’s against Facebook’s rules to use a fake name or operate under a false identity. We provide our users with the tools to report anyone they think is doing this via report links on every page of our site and we strongly recommend their use.”
