Social Networks: The full statistics picture

We do enjoy looking at a good infographic here at OSM and two recent examples we covered were one with statistics for social media marketing, and another about Facebook usage. Now we’ve spotted another great example of an infographic that makes the information easier to digest, this time with ‘everything you need to know about social networks.’

The infographic was created by TechKing and looks into global social networking and was brought to our attention by Polly Becker over on The Wall. It shows user numbers for some of the top social networks with Facebook at the top followed by Twitter, but there are also some networks that you may not have heard of listed along with their origins. For example Mixi is a Japanese social networking site with 24 million users, Kaixin001 in China has 90 million users and Vkontakte, for Russian-speaking users, numbers 110 million.

There are also detailed statistics for Facebook alone that tell us that the average Facebook user has 130 friends and 700 billion minutes per month are spent on Facebook by total users monthly. The top 10 Facebook pages are also details with Texas Hold’em Poker taking the top spot. The infographic then goes on to look at other information such as social networking around the world and age gaps in social networking and makes for very interesting reading so if you want to check out the full infographic head to the link above.

If you’re interested in social networking you may also find an article by Paul Boutin over on The New York Times worth a look. It points out that although Facebook is the name that many think of when they think of social networks, many more specialized network sites are springing up and details some of them.
