Nokia X7 On AT&T – U.S. Launch Cancelled

Just as we thought Nokia were going to release a phone to try and gain some share of the smartphone market, disaster strikes. We previously reported that the Nokia X7 had been spotted with an AT&T emblem on it; unfortunately we have to inform you that it’s not coming to AT&T.

This signals the cancellation of the US launch and yet another setback for Nokia. The intention was to launch the device at the MWC in February. As Christopher Lawton and Shaydi Raice of WSJ rightly say, this would have been the first Nokia smartphone launched exclusively since Stephen Elop took over as the CEO of Nokia in September 2010.

Nokia feel that they wouldn’t have received the marketing subsidies from AT&T and have therefore decided to pull the plug. Not good news if you were planning on getting the subsidized smartphone from AT&T but hold tight, no doubt as Engadget say, there will be some unlocked versions appearing on eBay as Nokia still plan on releasing the device in other markets.

Are you surprised by this move? Were you looking forward to getting the Nokia X7 on AT&T? Let us know in the comments below.
