BlackBerry Storm 3: Specs and release – QNX?

In the last couple of days we’ve brought you news of several upcoming BlackBerry phones from RIM, the BlackBerry Torch 2, the BlackBerry Curve and the BlackBerry Dakota but now more news arrives, this time about the BlackBerry Storm 3.

This is one of the higher-end phones that will be coming out, with a release date scheduled for September and there may be 2 or 3 global versions, with other possible names being the Monaco and Monza, according to an article by Jonathan S. Geller over on BGR.

Featuring the highest-ever BlackBerry smartphone display resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, with an optical trackpad, other specs include a 1.2GHz processor, quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, tri-band UMTS/HSPA and a 5-megapixel camera. According to BGR there’s also 512MB of RAM a microSD slot, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and 3G Mobile hotspot and it all runs on BlackBerry OS 6.1.

However an article by Carly Page over on DialToSave, sourced from KnowYourMobile reports that this could be the first RIM smartphone to run on the new QNX OS, which the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is also using.

It’s a bit of a mystery then but it will be interesting to see if QNX does turn up on the BlackBerry Storm 3 as Mike Lazarides, RIM CEO did hint recently of upcoming phones using the OS. What do you think of the BlackBerry Storm 3 and how likely do you think it is that it will run on the new QNX OS? Why not send us your comments to let us know your thoughts on this.

i think it would be huge for RIM to place the QNX OS into the Storm 3 but then the phone would need a dual core processor and 1GB of ram in order to function like the playbook (multitasking, intense graphics, gaming, etc).

I think it is ridiculous that BB thinks that a release of the storm 3 in September is a good idea. They will once again fail the remaining loyal BB users by releasing a 512 mb ram smartphone. If this phone was released tomorrow it would only just compete with the speed of its smart phone competitors. by September, without a complete overhaul of the storm specs it will definitely be out of date. I am a huge BB fan and always have been. I’ve been waiting for the playbook for a long time and still currently hold on to what was claimed to be the “apple eater” the storm 1. My wife recently purchased a HTC Desire running google and I am blow away at how little BB phones can do in comparison with HTC and Apple (you tube HTC Desire HD). Even though I’m very bitter at the companies more then poor decision making as of late (torch…) I will still wait it out for the playbook for QNX. But mark my words… If BB flops this tablet and it either can’t compete with the IPad which is to release it’s second version before the playbook launch, I anticipate the merger of BB with another company. Maybe I’m crazy, but when you look at the competition even in the tablet market, upcoming companies are already beginning to release tablets which in some cases double the speed of the playbook and carry thousands more apps. I hope QNX is what we all hope and if it is they better dump Os 6 and cram in QNX into ALL of there new phones. (which will piss off anyone who has recently bought a BB phone with os6 like my brother in law who has that pathetic excuse for a touch screen, Torch).
