Apple App Store: 10 billion downloads prize contest

Today we heard some amazing news about the Apple App Store which has seen phenomenal success since its launch. It’s fair to say that nobody could have foreseen just how successful it would be and an important milestone is about to be reached.

It seems that worldwide downloads from the Apple App Store are very close to numbering 10 billion. Stan Schroeder over on Mashable, sourced from Apple, informs us that the total number of app downloads from the Store by January 2010 was 3 billion and that has risen to almost 10 billion since.

The ongoing popularity of the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch has sped up the growth rate in apps downloaded and over at the Apple link above you can see the total of downloads clocking up. There is also the chance to win a $10,000 iTunes gift card if you are the lucky person to download the 10 billionth app.

Don Reisinger over on Cnet reports that the prize could also be won without actually downloading an app. If you want to try out the non-purchase method you’ll need to complete an entry form available on the Apple link above (full rules here).

It’s worth noting that since the Mashable article was published a few hours ago the Apple website counter shows an increase of around 8 million more downloads so it won’t take very long to get to that magical 10 billion mark. What do you think about this amazing milestone being reached and will you be entering the contest? Let us know with your comments.
