iPhone 4 on Verizon Revised CDMA: New Cases Needed?

After Verizon’s announcement today regarding its introduction into the world of Apple’s iPhone 4, it has now been discovered their handset is slightly altered. While thoughts were that the device would be virtually identical to the AT&T version, it would seem that there are differences.

Engadget say that photos taken of both devices together clearly show there is a slight relocation of the buttons. As we reported before the CDMA antenna has been moved after iPhone 4’s suffered a well publicized signal issue classed as the ‘Death Grip.’

Due to this repositioning, the volume and mute buttons are a fraction lower than the one’s found on GSM version. Now while this may seem like a minor issue, for the thousands of accessory cases it will mean that nothing (including Apple’s own buffer) will fit the Verizon device.

As pointed out by Network World, Verizon’s iPhone 4 Frequently Asked Questions page warns of possible incompatibilities. One of the questions covered is in fact; If I have an iPhone 4 on another wireless carrier and switch to an iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless, will all of my accessories be compatible? And the answer given states that while most accessories should work, there could be differences in things like cases depending on manufacturer.

All we know is that accessory manufacturers will be working around the clock to make sure that they have the correct adjustments made come the release date of February 10.

Do you think that the repositioning was intentional or an unforeseen slip up?
