CES 2011: VIA Vizio Tablet Preview – In-depth experience

Vizio is certainly making its presence felt at CES 2011 and we’ve already reported on a Vizio Cinema HDTV LED LCD, new Vizio Theater 3D HDTV’s and also posted another article about a Vizio Android tablet and Vizio phone. We didn’t have much information about the tablet at the time but now it’s been revealed in all its glory along with a video.

Donald Bell over on Cnet has had a hands-on, in-depth experience with the tablet which is called VIA and his preview gives some really useful information and a real feel for the device. He looked at an engineering sample running on Android and noted the responsive 8-inch screen and smoothly running custom UI.

Features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, accelerometer, GPS and a mini-HDMI port, Micro-USB port along with SDHC memory expansion. There’s also a front-facing camera but no rear camera but that might not be such a big deal especially if the price is right (so far unannounced). A really positive feature noted by Bell is an IR blaster built-in to the top of the device and Vizio claims this remote software will be compatible with the vast majority of AV hardware available.

Bell does note though that he’s interested to see how an 8-inch screen will cope with Android apps yet to be optimized for that platform but Vizio also claims there will be Android Marketplace compatibility so that’s a question of wait and see. All in all though Bell seems to have had a pretty positive experience with the Vizio Via tablet and declares it a “happy surprise.”

If you want to find out more read Bell’s full article or head to another hands-on preview over on Engadget by Joshua Topolsky with a video of the man himself in action who tells us a summer release is likely. What are your thoughts on the new Vizio Via tablet? Why not send us your comments on this.
