Netflix Button: Coming soon to a remote near you

This is one for Netflix lovers and the news is that soon remotes for new TV’s, Blu-ray players and set-top boxes may well have a dedicated Netflix button on them giving instant access. Partners with Netflix on the venture include Memorex, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba and Dynex (from Best Buy).

Internet-connected TV sets from Sony, Sharp and Toshiba will also have a Netflix button and Netflix will also be on the remotes for connected devices such as Boxee and Roku, according to Christina Warren over on Mashable. Netflix has endeavoured to become almost omnipresent and now has over 16 million users in North America and this move will bolster its position even more.

With the growing popularity of streaming media rather than using discs Netflix has positioned itself perfectly to take advantage of this and continues to increase its content and thus compete against Hulu and the Hulu Plus subscription service, with the added benefit of customer familiarity with its brand reaping rewards. Having a Netflix branded button on new remotes will only increase this familiarity and should pay dividends for the company.

According to W.J. Hennigan on The Los Angeles Times, attendees of CES 2011 in Las Vegas were given the news today and remotes including the Netflix button will be on sale this spring. What are your thoughts on this development? We’d appreciate your comments on this so please do send them in.
