UK Government plans for censorship of Internet Porn

We all know there are many pros and cons to the Internet and many people would point out one of the more unsavoury aspects of it, the prevalence of porn sites, is one of its big drawbacks. Although of course this depends entirely on personal taste!

Now though we hear that in the U.K. at least, it may not be so easy in future to access pornography via the Internet as there are plans for mass censorship by the British government. A Conservative MP, Claire Perry, in favour of this proposal, has cited children coming across pornographic material as being the reason that it should become more difficult to access it, according to Charlie White over on Mashable.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, Perry said, “We are not coming at this from an anti-porn perspective. We just want to make sure our children aren’t stumbling across things we don’t want them to see.” The government will now have meetings with Internet service providers early next year to talk about its ideas to censor Internet connections whereby only people who specifically request access to pornographic material, will receive access.

Caroline Davies of The Guardian also reports on this story and says that last month in parliament Claire Perry stated that 60% of 9 to 19 year olds had come across porn online. This proposal though would surely be riddled with complications and I for one can’t imagine a way that anybody could easily legislate what constitutes porn and what does not and where the line would be drawn and that’s just one of the problems that would have to be overcome. What are your thoughts on this? We’d welcome your comments please.
