Twitter & Gap Collaborate Using GPS Reindeer Campaign

Over the past 12 months or so, social media and the way in which brands can use it to their advantage is growing in popularity. So much so, that Gap has now launched their latest promotion in the lead up to Christmas.

The campaign uses huge clothing retailer Gap along with AKQA and the inclusion of eight live reindeer using GPS. What have reindeer got to do with promoting products, you are no doubt asking? According to Mashable, the reindeer which are put out on fields in Lake Crystal, Minn, are kitted out with a GPS system, which in turn, leaves you with the job of tracking them down.

The reindeer each have their own specific deal attached to them and dependant on who is the fastest, farthest, slowest or closest to the North Pole on a set day, will win you that deal. For instance, one of the eight reindeer may be able to give you a certain discount off a product, and where does Twitter come into the equation? As news.yahoo.com stated, fans are asked to tweet on their favorite reindeer.

Big brand names are now finding ways to reach out to their customers including the use of networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, where dedicated pages are put on for customers, along with the recent trend of using interactive animated products, viral videos via sites such as YouTube and even location-based sites such as Foursquare are getting in on the act with certain retailers offering discounts and coupons. How will this latest sales tactic fair with consumers?
