Facebook Hacker Cup 2011: Registration begins this December 20

With all the controversy surrounding hackers and hacking such as the recent hacking attacks on large companies by supporters of WikiLeaks, it’s easy to forget just how much skill is involved with hacking. Now though, hackers from around the world are being invited to take part in a Facebook Hacker’s Cup.

The inaugural Facebook Hackers Cup is an extension of Facebook’s hackathons taking it to a whole new level with the international coding competition. Winners will receive cash prizes and also a trip to the Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California, according to an AFP report on The Independent. Online rounds will begin in January and in March the final round will take place at the Facebook campus with Facebook paying for the 25 leading contenders to get to California for the final round.

The big winner will receive $5,000 which is not to be sniffed at so if you fancy your chances head to the Facebook Hacker Cup page here. You’ll see that Facebook obviously intend this to be the start of something as its page says it’s an “annual worldwide programming competition,” and there are also some practice puzzles to try out.
