iPad 2 case images: Important clues about rear camera and more

We’ve been bringing you news and speculation about the next-generation iPad as soon as we hear it and recent posts have included news on the iPad 2 being rumored to ship in 100 days, the fact that it doesn’t look as though the iPad 2 will have a retina display but that it looks virtually certain that it will have a camera.

Now we have some more news for you this time from Eric Slivka over on MacRumors. It seems that some cases for the iPad 2nd generation have been spotted and images have been seen which give some clues about the device. One of the pictures is from Shenzen MacTop Electronics via iLounge and shows the reverse of the iPad 2 case, or at least it claims to. There is an opening on the top left of the case which suggests a rear-facing camera which may surprise many who had only expected a front-facing camera.

Another aperture on the side of the device is roughly in the same location as the mute switch and the volume rocker on the current iPad and another opening along the bottom is thought to be for a dock connector. To the left of the dock connector there’s a bigger space in the area where the speaker is located on the present iPad.

Another case image is from Kodawarisan (Google Translation here), and shows the rear of a black and a white case which also claims to be for the next iPad. The same opening for a rear-facing camera is present and on the top right hand side of the case is a hole in the same position for where the headphone jack is on the current iPad. The larger opening to the left of the dock connector also shows on this image and it’s mooted that this could be for an SD card.

Interestingly another article over on Powerbook Medic shows more supposed next-generation iPad silicone cases. These also show the puzzling larger opening to the left and it’s noted again that this could be an SD card slot, or could possibly be for a flip-down HDMI out port. Although this is all unconfirmed it is striking that three lots of images of cases for the iPad 2 have emerged, all with openings in roughly the same places so we think this does give a few hints about what we can expect. We’d be interested to know what you think so why not send us your comments.
