MOvember: Making Awareness Last

I don’t know how many of you were aware of the term “MOvember” but it has had quite an impact on me. I used to work for a large company and a colleague of mine had some troubles relating to prostate cancer, he introduced me to the concept of MOvember. The name has come from a combination of Moustache and November.

So what is MOvember? It is a month long event that is launched to raise awareness for prostate cancer and was in fact started in Australia in 1999, the idea of it is that you start off November clean shaven and throughout the month you grow your moustache. When people ask you why all of a sudden everyone has grown a moustache it is a perfect opportunity to not only raise awareness of the charity but also to encourage each other to go and get checked out.

Another ex colleague which kindly features in our picture wore his moustache proudly for the duration of the month as did many. Now believe it or not there are rules to your moustache and they are as follows. Something else that we found is “Mo Space” where you can view the “Top Taches” on the web as well as how much was raised by person.

On Shadowe’en (October 31st), the complete moustache region, including the entire upper lip and the handlebar zones, must be completely shaved. For the entire duration of MOvember (MOvember 1st – 30th inclusive), no hair shall be allowed to grow in the goatee zone – being any facial area below the bottom lip. There is to be no joining of the moustache to sideburns.

So that you can grow yours and raise awareness for next year make sure you “Like” the Facebook Interest page by going here. For tips on how to make MOvember last head on over to Jason Falls’ article by clicking here. There has been an awful lot of Twitter reaction throughout the whole of MOvember and now there is more about people chopping theirs off which you can view here. The month long event even hit our troops out in Afghanistan! Some of the Tweets were UP_STOP_CANCER: ’Movember’ is prostate cancer month, and AllCharities tweeted “Growing funds slowly: They signed up to Movember, the worldwide phenomenon that saw more than 2500,000 people take it up. You can view this year’s donations per country by clicking here.

So come on guys how much you made for the charities? Something else that I am wondering is just how much did Social Networking and Social Media help this year’s contributions, so if you took part last year and this year but used your Facebook to help then let us know in the comments below.
