Problems for Google TV: A sad story

The Google TV platform was only launched in recent weeks but if current indications are anything to go by it could already have real problems, especially if you take into consideration that price cuts are already taking place from both Best Buy and Sony.

Unfortunately Google TV ran into troubles from the off with the sad story of its failure to secure content deals with the big media companies but the price was also fairly prohibitive. However Sony is addressing this issue as its set-top box model is already on sale despite it not being even a month old, according to Matt Burns over on TechCrunch.

This can’t be good news for Google TV as Sony is much like Apple as far as its pricing policy is concerned, as it tries to allocate the best price straight away and it’s only when new models are being released that there are usually significant price reductions. However with the Sony Internet TV Blu-ray Disc Player the price has already been cut by $100 and it’s now on sale for $299.

This doesn’t even appear to be some holiday shopping promotion as you can now see the price drop on Sony’s product page, as well as outlets such as Best Buy. Also other Sony price cuts for products, in the Black Friday sales for example, don’t show such a notable drop so it does rather appear that Sony dropping the price already means that sales are not hitting their targets. It all looks then as though Google TV could be an uncharacteristic failure for Google but it may be too soon to tell yet, we’ll just have to wait a little bit longer to see for sure.

The Google TV concept is not a dead concept as some, such as the major TV networks, are praying for.

The problem with the initial devices now on the market is that they are not "finished" products. There are issues interfacing and controlling cable / satellite STBs (set top boxes) and other devices, pass through of HD audio, and legal issues over the way some will make money when their proprietary content is allow to flow through a Google TV STB.

Most of these issues will be resolved in coming editions of Google TV STBs. Those that won't deal will be relegated to becoming a footnote to the history of entertainment.

i would have bought a google tv right away, but i asked the best buy sales people twice to pull up a site that had live streaming video, and all i saw was "need plugin". The sales people (twice) said that they had no idea how to fix this.

I bought a $1400 Sony Google TV and I am not happy with it. The Chrome OS crashes all the time, several times daily. The Netflix App also sucks. I cannmot believe they out out a product like this without fixing the major bugs.

Good idea, but I will not buy yet another piece of equipment. Make it available as a download to PS3 and I'm all in.
