Black Friday Social Experiment: Buy Nothing

Ever been in the situation where you want to shop but cant work out what it is that you want to buy? Or perhaps you need to get something for someone that has everything. Well this is where Jonathan Mariano’s new business venture could solve all your problems.

A report by Triple pundit says that the launch of buy Nothing is a mixture of social experiment and business school plan competition.

Like the name suggests Shop Nothing.com allows you to purchase nothing for various amounts of money. Bear with us here; although it sounds crazy (well it is pretty crazy) there is an element of genius. Mr Mariano explains his plan by stating “After sitting in on the 2010 Net Impact Walmart quick pitch competition, I was inspired to create something to take to the BizPlan competition next year. All the ideas I ran into where more sustainable than the alternative, but they weren’t truly sustainable because they all required consumption. Then I came up with the idea of selling nothing. If Jerry Seinfeld can make a show about nothing, someone is bound to make a business out of selling nothing.”

Once you have logged on to the site you will have the opportunity to buy different levels of Nothing, from your Nothing Basic at $4.99, through to Nothing Essential and Nothing Deluxe priced at $9.95 and $19.95. If you’re feeling rather flush however Nothing Premium can be picked up for an amazing $99.95. Now that’s a lot of money for Nothing, but as they say you don’t get something for nothing.

Obviously with Black Friday upon us there are deals to be had, if you splash out on Nothing Essential or above you will receive 50% discount. So that just leaves the question, how much would you be prepared to spend on Nothing?
