New Facebook Trademark: “Face” and Online Chat Rooms

Previously we have brought you plenty of news about Facebook like their issues with privacy, tips to help families keep privacy on Facebook as well as their new messaging system. Well now we bring you a slightly different type of news for Facebook.

Facebook are trying to patent the word “Face” when used on bulletin boards and in online chat rooms, the guys are Facebook actually filed for this quite a while ago, sometime in December ‘05 and only now is this finally coming to an end.

I feel Facebook is beginning to get a certain arrogance with it these days, especially when you think that they actually put in a law suit against another site for putting “book” in their name, that was Teachbook.com. Now I don’t know about you but I think that is kind of harsh, what if I were to create a website called timbook.com would they try and sue me too? Apple’s “Facetime” better watch out, or are Apple to big a fish for Facebook to contend with? If Facebook were to get this patent what would they file for next? I think this is a bit of a slippery slope so they had better tread carefully when approving / rejecting. You can read more about this interesting story over at mashable.com where Stan Schroeder has written an article.

Really tired of Facebook, and its constant privacy lapses.. just waiting to give Diaspora and MyCube – two considerably more secure options – a chance at making social networking secure and enjoyable again. Really hope atleast one of these alternatives click!
