Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner App Available On iPhone

Although we have all seen Star Wars-themed games before on various different platforms, Vertigore Games has developed the very first augmented reality Star Wars game for the iPhone. It’s been released on iTunes for $4.99, and has been designed with the iPhone 4’s retina display in mind, but is also available for the iPad.

Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner, puts you in Luke Skywalker’s position in the gun turret of the Millennium Falcon, as you escape the grasps of the Death Star. As TIE Fighters surround your ship, you can turn your iPhone to rotate the turret and shoot Vader’s hordes. In the back ground you are encouraged by the voices of your compatriots, Han Solo and Princess Leah. According to Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch the game is totally immersive.

Adding to the excellent game play is a augmented reality mode which allows you to replace the computer graphics with the background picked up by your camera. This means that if you were playing the game in the park for instance, the attacking spaceships would look like they were approaching from behind the swings. Although this is an interesting extra, I’m sure that most of you would rather play with the Death Star graphic looming in the distance.

Vertigore Games say that a lot of work and money has gone into making this game, and are hoping for great success to bring the budget back in line. Whatever way you look at it Star Wars Arcade is set to be a big hit, and will definitely place a new benchmark for future iPhone games.
