Google New e-commerce Site: Capabilities And Components

I think it is fair to say that when somebody says the word Google, the first thing that pops into your mind will not be glamour and fashion. In fact its most probably the big colourful letters and a computer that you think of first.

Alas, Google are trying to change this image with their brand new fashion shopping site Boutiques.Com. According to the NY Times it is a collection of hundreds of virtual boutiques merchandised by designers, retailers, bloggers, celebrities and regular folks.

For example you can shop in the style of the actress Carey Mulligan or Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen who are a few of the celebrities who have also signed up for the launch. Alternately you can build your own boutique and gather followers who can comment on your taste. The service launched today and is available for users to show off their style.

Apparently the technology was in fact developed by Like.com, a Silicon Valley company co-founded by Munjal Shah, which Google acquired last summer for a reported $100 million after success from a number of other fashion e-commerce sites, including Covet.com, and the styling tool Couturious.com. A number if big companies such as eBay and Amazon have been trying to get in on the act. See the NY Times for plenty more detail.
