Facebook Monday Event: Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail Killer?

Today there is an event that Facebook are expected to launch their own fully fledged web based email system or some kind of mail functionality. They may even be announcing their own email address, for example I would be tim.ollason@facebook.com.

This is all well and good but what sort of effect will this have on the competitors such as Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail? You have to wonder as well, are Facebook doing this just to spite Google following their recent feuds of which you can read about here.

Apparently this project has been codenamed Project Titan as Facebook look to stick the knife into all of its competitors. I am also wondering that if this does get announced and goes ahead, what will happen to existing Facebook users? Will you be forced to change the email address associated with your Facebook account? If you do have to change the email address, will your present contacts be moved across with it? If you want to know more about what has been said then please head across to bbc.co.uk by clicking here.

Little is known about this so I guess we need to sit tight and wait and see what happens, I guess this means nervous times for Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail.

If this gets announced will you sign up to have a Facebook email address? Let us know in the comments below.

Bit late catching up with this article, but I have to confess that I find the Facebook "e-mail service" a real downgrade from the previous version of Facebook's messaging service. Now every message appears to be threaded together, rather than individual e-mails, and I don't think it's going to be a threat to existing mail services in its current guise.
