New Facebook Event: No Phone Just Gmail Alternative

Here at OSM we reported yesterday of news that Facebook will be holding an event on Monday 15 November in San Francisco. Apart from the invitation containing the date and time of arrival, we really do not have much to go on in terms of what Facebook will be announcing. Speculation has been surrounding whether Project Titan will be the main feature, and judging by today’s news this will be the case.

Back at the start of the year, TechCrunch reported on this web based email client known as “Gmail killer.” Alongside this, it is hoped that the social networking site will announce personal@facebook.com email addresses for users. By digesting today’s news, indications are strongly pointing towards Facebook building a fully fledged webmail client, and not just a UI refresh for the site’s current messaging service incorporating POP access. With the online social networking site growing in user numbers and popular features such as photos, events and a local deals product, it seems inevitable that Facebook will do a pretty good job in sorting out our personal email system.

At the moment we can only wait until 10 am on Monday 15 November to find out the exact details, currently all we have to go on is rumor. But it does pose the question of Facebook’s quick announcement of the event and it’s fight with Google over contact information.

What would you like to see come out of Monday’s event? Let us know. To find out more log onto TechCrunch.
