Facebook look to expand with email service- How will it compare?

With the feisty wars we have nowadays between the likes of Facebook and Google you cant blame them for wanting to get into each others business. We have heard for a while now about the search engine’s supposed social network Google Me, and now we are getting word that Facebook are planning their very own email service.

Facebook look to expand with email service- How will it compare?

An email service is one of the big things Facebook is missing which its competitors have. The likes of Microsoft’s Hotmail, Google’s Gmail and Yahoo! Mail have all been a big success. Reports from Google tell us that Hotmail currently has the most users with 361.7 million as of September; Yahoo! comes next with 273.1 million and further behind is Gmail with 193.3 million.

This leads us to the question of how popular Facebook’s email service will be when it stacks up against its rivals. The social network currently has over 500 million users and you can bank on the fact that a fair few of their current member will jump on their email bandwagon. I am not confident the service will have the power to instantly overhaul its biggest rivals, but over time it will most certainly give them a run for their money. All they need to do is add some unique features to their email service and they are on to a certain winner. Easier said then done, I know.

We reported to you earlier that Facebook plans to announce a Web-based email service complete with @Facebook.com addresses at an event in San Francisco on Monday. We finally should all now come to terms with the fact there will be no Facebook Phone, like many say every time the social network holds an event. A nice new email service does not sound too bad on the other hand so if you were hoping for the handset dont be too upset.

What do you think about Facebook’s plans of introducing their own email service? Would you make an account and use their service if they did? Tell us your thoughts by leaving a comment.
