Firefox is 6-years-old : How far has it come?

When Mozilla’s Firefox web browser was launched 6 years ago nobody could have guessed how popular it would become, especially as it was up against Internet Explorer 6 which at that time was ruling the roost. Today, Firefox is celebrating its sixth birthday so we wondered how far it had come in that time.

An article by Stan Schroeder over on Mashable says that Firefox now has a 31.5% share of the market, according to figures from StatCounter. It is now the second most used browser and still seeing consistent growth. We recently told of the delay of Firefox 4 which was originally anticipated for launch before the year’s end but will now come out in early 2011.

It should be worth the wait though as the next version will have HTML5 support, a revamped UI and also multi-touch functionality. Jetpack will also give better support for add-ons and users will see hardware-accelerated HD video, so a lot to look forward to and it would appear that indeed, Firefox has come an awful long way.

Firefox is definitely my favorite browser.
The addon system makes it awesome and I'm looking forward to the speed and Panorama feature in 4.0.
