Facebook Places Deals: How does it work?

Following on from yesterday’s Facebook Mobile event at Palo Alto headquarters, the online social networking site has introduced a new “Deals Service” on Facebook Mobile. At the event Facebook revealed enhancements within its location API along with a single sign-in process.

According to Mark Hachman at PCMag.com, Facebook’s mobile chief Erick Tseng said in an interview, “Obviously, mobile is huge, location is huge,” when questioned about the new deals close tie with its mobile application. The new service should be available on iOS devices or Android, but for demonstration purposes Facebook team members showcased it on an iPhone.

Once a Facebook user logs in they can search for “nearby places” which could have either a yellow price tag or sticky, these are the deals and users will be able to access them. Deals will include, individual, loyalty, friend and charity. Discounts will also be available for those bringing new subscribers to the site. Within each icon, businesses will be allowed to add various deal options with up to two lines of text.

Each deal can be tailored to individuals by the merchant allowing things like discount or freebie items to the customer. The friends deal seems the favorite option as you could be entitled to large discounts off group spending. Without the use of codes or icons, Facebook users will just have to click on the deal to access it then display it to the cashier. At the moment Facebook has released the deals to 22 establishments and introducing it to 20,000 small organizations across America. Facebook’s Mobile and Places program has competition against location-based sites such as FourSquare and SCVNGR although FourSquare did fail to make an appearance at the event.
