Barnes & Noble to launch a new NOOK? Special event will tell

Book selling chain Barnes & Noble has announced they are holding a special event on October 26th, and with exclusive invites going around we are all wondering what they could possibly be going to unveil. A new NOOK is the most likely and expected possibility.

It has been about a year since Barnes & Noble pulled back the curtain to unveil their NOOK E-Reader, which would play as the biggest competitor to Amazon’s Kindle. Just to spice things up a bit, Mashable has revealed that B&N are rolling out their firmware version 1.5, which is not only compatible with existing models but paves the way for a new device to be launched.

The NOOK did not live up to everyone’s expectation; however it did succeed as you will see that it has achieved a 21% revenue increase for its company so far in 2010. If the announcement at next Tuesdays event is the good news of a new NOOK then expectation may rise. On the other hand there are new tablets out on the market rite now that the NOOK will have to compete with, such as the iPad and Kindle.

Whatever B&N unveil at their event will no doubt sell plenty of units as long as they can get them on to the market before Christmas. With a far lighter price tag than Apple’s tablet their main rival will be the Kindle who are also offering a very modest and cost effective price. What would you like to see come from the Barnes & Noble event? Tell us in the comments.
