Twitter: Greater Manchester Police Tweeting incident’s over 24 hours

Police in Manchester have decided to post every incident it has to deal with in the next 24 hours on Twitter. They have decided on this to show the range of things they have to deal with on any given day.

The posts by Greater Manchester Police began at 5am this morning, and have so far included a horse on the loose, an alleged rape, and an unattended bag at Manchester airport. In four hours the force had over 6,000 followers, and had posted more than 400 tweets, and by 11am this had rose to 700 tweets and 18,000 followers.

The biggest amount of calls the police received related to burglaries and car thefts, the force has said they deal with 20,000 burglaries every year. Some of the calls have been more of a ridiculous nature, with reports of annoying text messages to a man lying in a driveway.

Greater Manchester Police’s chief constable Peter Fahy said ‘Policing is often seen in very simple terms, with cops chasing robbers and locking them up, ‘However, the reality is that this accounts for only part of the work they have to deal with.’ He has been updating the Twitter feed using his BlackBerry cell phone.
