Verizon’s Droid R2-D2 Released Today

News has filtered through, that Verizon will be launching the new “Droid R2-D2” handset today. For those of you who have been waiting patiently for its arrival, can now see it in the flesh, along with a couple of storm troopers at New York’s Herald Square.

Blake Robinson at Mashable headed on down there to get a glimpse of the new handset along with its fantastic new features. From first impressions of the new device, it is obvious that it is similar to that of the Droid 2. It features Android 2.2 (froyo) and will be powered by a 1Ghz processor. But the unique selling point to this latest mobile phone is that the R2-D2 name purely comes from the Star Wars films. Blake reported on the new design as comprising of a 3.7-inch screen and a colour change to the outer casing. When turning the device on, R2-D2 will greet you in his own special language; users will then see a home screen incorporating a Star Wars background. Wallpapers have been added in line with the theme including: 3D Millennium Falcon, The Empire Strikes Back, asteroids and so on.

For users accessing the keyboard, they will see it outlined in white and R2-D2 printed on the back of the screen. For the avid Star Wars follower, a new “binoculars” app showing the “Battle of Hoth” can also be viewed.

So, if you are looking to buy a Droid R2-D2 and you consider being the world’s biggest Star Wars fan then this is possibly the phone for you. It has been priced at the higher end of the market of Android devices at $250 after a $100 mail-in rebate.
