New social network to take on Facebook: Google Me?

We reported yesterday about Google’s plans to hatch out a social network of their own and have some very interesting developments on this story to share with you. According to sources at Dvice, Google CEO Eric Schmidt has made some comments when quizzed about these suggestions in the Google Zeitgeist conference in Arizona today.

Schmidt said that “The best thing that Facebook could do is open up its data. Failing that there are other ways to get this information.” With the follow up statement it looks like Google are not getting their hopes up, and assume Facebook will not play nice. It is hard to see Mark Zuckerberg and his empire of users happily handing over their information to help Google’s threat rise.

It has been said that Google are developing a plan for Facebook to help destroy themselves. When asked if “Google Me” followed a similar trend to Facebook, Schmidt replied “the world doesn’t need a copy of the same thing”, which indicates Google is trying to bring a new style of social networking to the party, opposed to an “improved” copy of Facebook.

We will bring you developments on this news as we get it so keep a look out. If this article interested you, then you can also find our article from yesterday by following the link in the 1st paragraph. What do you think about the idea of “Google Me?” Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Personally, I can't wait! The usability of Facebook is flawed and, more or less, senseless. Customization is a real hassle, and impossible on certain aspects. I use Facebook because everyone else does, while MySpace fell in its dust. GoogleMe, if/when released, imo, will take over the social network, and do the same thing to Facebook, as it did to MySpace. Looking forward to it! ^_^
