Weather Forecast and Advice Via Facebook Page

Facebook, one of the biggest online social networking sites is increasing in user numbers by the day, and now, a council in Lancashire has bought in a page on the site with the idea of keeping its residents informed of current weather conditions.

According to News Lancashire, the idea to do this stems from bad weather conditions experienced by all last winter. Darwen Council together with Blackburn have put the page together under the name of BwD Winter. Lancashire users will have the benefits of accessing local forecasts, gritting of roads, school closures and bin collections which can all be affected in harsh weather conditions.

Following on from last year’s bad weather, the council felt that they needed to be prepared. As well as the Facebook page, they have organised 2,500 tonnes of salt, and have found a second supplier in Ireland in case supplies run out! Peter Hunt, director of environment has said, “It is too early to say that the weather will be like this… but we are ready”.

At this stage we cannot say whether people will take advantage of this new weather page, but for now, Lancashire council are getting the most out of social media. It’s free, fast and a good source of communication.
