Boulder Colorado Fire and role of social media

The wildfire in Boulder, Colorado that began on Monday morning still continues to rage on and now dozens of homes have been destroyed and more than 3,000 people evacuated from the area. Shelters for those evacuated have been set up as firefighters continue to battle the blaze.

The use of social media in times of crisis has become more and more apparent in recent times, for example for the Haiti earthquake, or at the time of the ash cloud from the Iceland volcano, and now social media once again has a role to play. Not only can residents in the area keep tabs on what is happening and what moves to make next but even the sheriff’s department has recognized the importance of social media and the role that it can play, according to Cory Bergman over on LostRemote.

An example of this occurred when the Boulder Sheriff’s emergency alert system failed and the best way of then communicating with residents to notify them about evacuations and other information was recognized as being with Twitter or Facebook. Many people are now visiting #boulderfire to gain the information they need as well as offer to help others.

Another way of keeping people informed has been through local newsrooms which have increased their amount of social media coverage with Twitter updates for instance. Also at Boulder the University of Colorado who mapped tweets about the Haiti quake, are now doing the same thing for the Boulder wildfire which shows destroyed homes, fire reports and much more.
