Google Voice with Gmail: Over 1 million calls in 24 hours

Google has just released its new service, using Google voice on Gmail and you may have expected the Call Phone innovation would prove popular, but not many of us would have anticipated, just how popular. In fact on looking at the figures Skype might just have some competition on its hands.

Google has spread the amazing news via a tweet that over one million calls were made on Gmail during its first 24 hours of going live. The advantage of Google and calls with Gmail are its ready-made base of users, over 176 million by December 2009, according to Stan Schroeder over on Mashable.

So far the service was only launched in the U.S. and Canada and apparently a few other countries can access it too, so even more calls will be made when it becomes fully available in other countries. At present the cost of calls in the U.S. is free and will be until at least the end of the year, while other countries have low rate calls.
